Chateau of Coppet

Vaud, Switzerland

The Castle

With foundations dating from the thirteenth century, the Castle of Coppet has seen several periods and several occupants.

A period however is illustrated by its wealth and the fame of its residents, Jacques Necker and his daughter Germaine. The one that will become the famous Madame de Staël remains to this day an inseparable figure of the castle and the whole Lemanic basin.

An intellectual literary figure, essayist and recognized writer, she was exiled from Paris by Napoleon Bonaparte who distrusted his "too developed spirit for a woman".

Thus, sometimes prison, sometimes refuge, Coppet was the home of Madame de Stael for many years.
